Pharmacological Activities of Some Medicinal Plants: a Minireview

Scientific evaluation of medicinal plants according to their ethnopharmacological or traditional methods of use in for treatment of various diseases enables them to be used in modern medicine. Ethnobotany is a branch of science which deals with the medicinal plants and their biological activities. In the early1900s, 80% of all medicines were obtained from roots, barks and leaves. Natural products continue to be significant sources of drugs and leads. Approximately 60% of anticancer compounds and 75% of drugs for infectious diseases are natural products. Medicinal plants are the richest source of drugs. Phytochemicals, with discrete bio-activities are being widely examined for their ability to provide health benefits. Medicinal plants are a great source of economic value in India. Herbal medicine is the main source of medicine for 75‐80% of the whole population, because of their better compatibility in the human body with fewer side effects. In the present communication, the potentials of various plants in disease management are discussed. © 2014 Universal Research Publications. All rights reserved
